About the opportunity

Fellows are appointed as full-time Columbia Officers of Research and are provided with office space in the Academy’s landmarked building, health benefits, and access to Columbia’s intellectual community. The program supports emerging postdoctoral researchers and established faculty seeking an inspiring environment in New York City.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Postdoctoral scholars and faculty seeking protected, fully funded time away from teaching to focus exclusively on high-impact research
  • Scholars eager to immerse themselves in an interdisciplinary cohort and actively participate in weekly cross-field seminar exchanges
  • Scientists whose projects specifically benefit from active, pledged collaboration with Columbia University faculty and laboratories

What should you think carefully about?

  • Full-time in-person residency in New York City is mandatory, and unapproved travel or absences of two or more days are restricted
  • Accommodation is not included or paid for, though fellows receive administrative support when applying for Columbia Housing
  • Awards cannot be deferred to future academic years; candidates unable to take up the fellowship in 2027–28 will forfeit the offer

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This fellowship is exceptionally well suited for early-career researchers aiming to establish international scholarly networks at an Ivy League institution, as well as tenured or mid-career scholars planning a funded semester or sabbatical to complete a major book, monograph, or scientific paper. It offers an ideal balance of financial stability, institutional affiliation, and intellectual freedom without competing teaching obligations.

Our take

Researchers from any country with an active PhD who want focused research time in New York City and value cross-disciplinary engagement should strongly consider applying. It is less suitable for scholars who require remote work, those seeking funded housing, or researchers who need the flexibility to teach or hold external employment concurrently.
