About the opportunity

Join the Quantum Nanophysics team (QNP) at the University of Vienna, led by Prof. Markus Arndt, to work on experiments at the interface between quantum and classical physics and quantum and bio-molecular science. The role involves developing universal matter-wave interferometry for high mass and high complexity, focusing on the research project Q4-BIO, which explores quantum tools for and quantum physics with neutral biomolecules. The position is part of a thriving quantum science community in Vienna and Austria, affiliated with the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (qAustria), the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), and the the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ).

Salary and benefits

  • Basic salary of EUR 3,776.10 (based on 40h p.w., paid 14x p.a.), with potential increases for credited professional experience.
  • International academic team and a healthy, fair working environment.
  • Free internal further training and coaching through the Vienna Doctoral School and the department of human resources.
  • Opportunities to connect with top global research groups.

Who can apply?

  • Must have completed a Master's degree or Diploma in physics, or hold an equivalent qualification allowing PhD enrollment at the University of Vienna, before the position starts. Candidates from a structured four-year Bachelor's program are also considered.
  • Extended hands-on experience in at least two of the following: molecular beam sources, (cryogenic) ultra-high-vacuum systems, superconducting nanowire detectors, advanced optics, laser systems and frequency conversion, or mass spectrometry/matter-wave research.
  • Demonstrable experimental design, construction, and troubleshooting skills in the laboratory.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Required documents

  • Scientific curriculum vitae.
  • Short statement on future research interests.
  • One-page motivation letter describing the most relevant recent publications from www.quantumnano.at to the applicant's skills and the technical/scientific contribution they would add.
  • Summary of previous academic and research achievements.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Physics graduates with a Master's degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Candidates with significant hands-on experience in ultra-high-vacuum systems, laser systems, or matter-wave research.
  • Researchers eager to join a thriving, internationally recognized quantum science community in Vienna.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The role is on-site in Vienna, requiring relocation if you are not currently based there.
  • You must demonstrate specific experimental skills in at least two of the listed technical areas to be considered.
  • The application requires a very specific motivation letter linking your skills to the team's recent publications.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This PhD position is an ideal goal for a researcher aiming to work at the absolute forefront of quantum nanophysics. Being part of the QNP team and the broader Vienna quantum community provides unparalleled access to top-tier research facilities and global networks, setting a strong foundation for a future career in high-level physics.

Our take

This is an excellent opportunity for experimental physicists with a strong technical background and a clear interest in quantum tools for biomolecules. Those without the required hands-on laboratory experience will find this role less suitable.
