About the opportunity
The Karges Research Group at the Chair of Biophysics is offering a fixed-term, part-time (65%) PhD position. The project investigates the mechanisms of action of novel metal complexes targeting cancer-relevant proteins. The successful candidate will engage in an interdisciplinary environment spanning molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, biophysics, and translational medicine. Responsibilities include expressing and characterizing recombinant protein targets, studying drug-like compound interactions, and developing biochemical assays. Promising compounds will be tested in cancer cell monolayers and 3D tumor organoids. The role offers scientific independence, access to state-of-the-art methods, and the opportunity to contribute to the development of new cancer therapies.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Candidates with a strong background in recombinant protein expression and purification will be highly competitive.
- Researchers who enjoy working in interdisciplinary teams at the intersection of chemistry, biology, and medicine will thrive in this environment.
- Individuals seeking a high degree of scientific independence and the opportunity to work with advanced 3D tumor organoid models.
What should you think carefully about?
- This is a part-time position (65%), which may impact the total salary compared to a full-time PhD role.
- The position is fixed-term for 36 months, requiring careful planning for the completion of the PhD project within this timeframe.
- Applicants should be prepared to work in a bilingual environment (German/English) and be willing to learn the language they are less proficient in.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This position is an excellent opportunity for a researcher looking to build a broad scientific profile in translational medicine and biophysics. It provides a structured yet independent path toward a PhD while working within a leading German research university, making it ideal for those aiming for a career in academic or pharmaceutical research.
Our take
Candidates with a Master's degree in the life sciences who are eager to apply molecular biology techniques to cancer research should seriously consider this role. It is less suitable for those seeking a full-time commitment or those who are not interested in interdisciplinary, collaborative research.
