About the opportunity
The Department of Neuropsychology at Ruhr University Bochum investigates the neural basis of learning, memory, and spatial navigation in humans using state-of-the-art cognitive neuroscience methods like fMRI and deep neural network models. As part of the Collaborative Research Center ‘Episodic Memory’ (CRC 1844), Subproject A03 focuses on the format of memories, analyzing the contribution of sensory versus linguistic representational formats to memory scenarios using 3T and 7T fMRI and deep neural networks. The successful candidate will be trained in interdisciplinary research and collaborate with PIs and early career researchers across subprojects.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Ideal for researchers holding a Master's degree in psychology, cognitive science, or related fields who want to pursue an academic career path in cognitive neuroscience.
- A strong match for candidates with solid programming and statistical skills looking to apply multivariate analysis and deep neural network models to fMRI data.
- An excellent environment for individuals eager to work within an interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Center spanning psychology, philosophy, and computational neuroscience.
What should you think carefully about?
- The role is offered on a fixed-term part-time basis (75 percent schedule) ending December 31, 2030, which requires planning for post-project career steps.
- Funding is currently pending approval, and the position is advertised subject to project approval.
- Relocation to Bochum, Germany, is required as the physical place of work is Ruhr University Bochum, and interview travel costs are not reimbursed.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This position offers a structured pathway for early-career researchers aiming to gain high-level neuroimaging experience, publish impactful cognitive neuroscience research, and collaborate within a major German research center. It suits professionals looking to strengthen their academic profile through interdisciplinary training and advanced fMRI methodologies without formal teaching duties.
Our take
Applicants with a background in psychology or cognitive science who possess strong programming skills and an interest in episodic memory should seriously consider applying before the October 19, 2026 deadline. Candidates who require permanent job security immediately or are unable to relocate to Germany will find this fixed-term project position less suitable.
