Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • An ideal match for recent humanities or social science doctoral graduates specializing in the empirical or theoretical study of contemporary religion, religious anthropology, or sociology of religion.
  • Well-suited for researchers eager to engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary scholarship centered around philosophy, suffering, and contemporary polycrises like climate change and the loss of nature.
  • Provides an excellent platform for early-career researchers seeking stability with a three-year funded contract and dedicated time for scholarly publishing.

What should you think carefully about?

  • Requires relocation to Finland for the duration of the employment contract.
  • A fixed-term commitment of three years that requires balancing independent research with collaborative team activities and limited teaching responsibilities.
  • Applicants must meticulously prepare a detailed three-page research proposal and motivation letter specifically tailored to the project's thematic framework.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This postdoctoral position serves as an exceptional stepping stone for an academic career in the study of religion, offering protected time for high-impact international publications, interdisciplinary collaboration within a recognized Centre of Excellence, and integration into the academic community at the University of Helsinki.

Our take

Early-career researchers with a strong background in the study of religion and a passion for interdisciplinary inquiry into contemporary global challenges should seriously consider applying. Those unable to relocate to Finland or whose research interests fall outside the scope of vernacular responses to suffering will find the role less suitable.
