About the opportunity

This 4-year PhD position is part of the QUIET-ARC project, a collaborative initiative between Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) under the EuroTech Universities PhD programme. The research focuses on improving the acoustic performance of lightweight timber buildings by developing efficient numerical simulation methods and investigating how different connection types—such as screws, nails, brackets, and adhesive joints—influence sound transmission. You will be based primarily in the Building Acoustics research group within the Department of the Built Environment at TU/e and will spend approximately six months at DTU’s Acoustic Technology group in Denmark. The project is supervised by dr.ir. Cédric Van hoorickx (TU/e) and dr.ir. Jonas Brunskog (DTU).

Salary and benefits

  • Full-time employment contract for four years with a gross base salary ranging from €3,204 to €4,051 per month (Scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • An 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus calculated on the annual gross base salary.
  • Participation in the ABP pension scheme, with TU/e covering 70% of the premium.
  • Generous leave options starting at 29 days per year for a 38-hour work week, expandable up to 41 days with flexible working hours.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home, and internet costs.
  • Access to high-quality training programs, teaching opportunities (10% to 15% of your time), and dedicated support for scientific research and wellbeing, including free access to OpenUp mental health support and the on-campus Student Sports Center.
  • Relocation support via a Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (Expat Scheme) for international candidates.

Who can apply?

  • Hold a master's degree (or an equivalent university degree) in acoustics, building physics, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Possess a research-oriented attitude and motivation to develop teaching skills and coach students.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English at a C1 level.

Required documents

  • Cover letter describing your motivation and qualifications for the position.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Ideal for researchers with a background in acoustics, structural dynamics, or civil/mechanical engineering who want to contribute directly to sustainable construction.
  • Strong appeal for candidates seeking an international, collaborative academic environment through a joint degree framework between two leading European technical universities.
  • Well-suited for individuals interested in balancing rigorous computational modeling with practical structural engineering applications and teaching experience.

What should you think carefully about?

  • Requires a 4-year commitment with an intermediate assessment after nine months, as well as mandatory teaching responsibilities of 10% to 15% per year.
  • Involves a mandatory research stay of approximately six months at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
  • Applications must be submitted through the designated portal by the strict deadline of November 10, 2026, with complete supporting documentation including references.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This 4-year PhD position provides a structured pathway to establish an academic research profile, gain international mobility experience between the Netherlands and Denmark, and contribute to cutting-edge low-carbon building technologies. It offers robust financial stability, professional development, and comprehensive employee benefits, making it an excellent platform for launching a career in building physics, structural acoustics, or sustainable engineering research.

Our take

Candidates with a relevant Master's degree and a strong interest in computational modeling or building acoustics should seriously consider applying before the November 10, 2026 deadline. Those lacking proficiency in English at a C1 level or without a background in related engineering disciplines will find the position less suitable.
