About the opportunity

DTU Compute and the Pioneer Centre for Artificial Intelligence invite applications for a PhD scholarship in 3D egocentric vision and spatial AI. The successful candidate will join the research group led by Associate Professor Theodora Kontogianni in the Visual Computing Section at DTU Compute. The research investigates how intelligent systems can perceive, understand, and interact with the three-dimensional world through computer vision, machine learning, and multimodal representation learning. The PhD project will focus on learning spatial representations from egocentric visual observations, exploring directions such as multimodal 3D perception, continual and online learning, open-world scene understanding, and adaptive perception for embodied agents. The position offers an opportunity to conduct research at the forefront of 3D computer vision and embodied AI, collaborate with leading researchers internationally, and contribute to major publications.

Salary and benefits

  • Fully funded 3-year PhD position with a competitive salary based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
  • Opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers in Denmark and internationally
  • Participation in research-group activities, teaching, and publication in major international venues
  • Access to relocation support and seminars for international applicants moving to Denmark

Who can apply?

  • A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree (applicants may apply prior to obtaining their master's degree but cannot begin before receiving it)
  • Strong background in computer vision and machine learning
  • Experience with deep-learning frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Strong programming and debugging skills in Python and/or C++
  • Experience using Linux and software-development tools such as Git, Conda, or Docker
  • Ability to conduct independent research and collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Required documents

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma in English, including official description of the grading scale
  • Names of up to 2 people who may be contacted to provide reference letters (e.g., master's thesis supervisor)

When to apply

  • Application deadline: 4 September 2026 (23:59 Danish time)

  • Submit the complete application before the deadline

Additional information

  • The assessment of applicants will be carried out by an academic assessment committee chaired by Associate Professor Theodora Kontogianni.
  • As DTU works with research in critical technology subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Master's degree holders with a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and deep-learning frameworks
  • Programmers proficient in Python or C++ with experience in Linux and development tools like Git or Docker
  • Candidates eager to work at the intersection of 3D perception and embodied AI within a pioneering research center

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is a 3-year commitment, requiring a high level of dedication to a single research area
  • The role is on-site in Kgs. Lyngby, though relocation support is available for international applicants
  • Applicants should verify their eligibility for potential security and export control background checks

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This scholarship is ideal for a student looking to contribute to the cutting edge of spatial AI. It offers the chance to publish in top-tier venues and collaborate with leading international researchers, setting a strong foundation for a career in academia or advanced industry R&D.

Our take

Highly recommended for computer vision students with strong technical skills; those who are not interested in 3D egocentric vision or embodied AI should look for more aligned research topics.
