About the opportunity
The livestock sector plays a vital role in Burundi’s rural economy, contributing to food security and household nutrition. However, animal productivity remains low due to local breeds with low genetic potential, scarce reproductive services, and limited technical expertise in reproductive biotechnologies. To address these challenges, the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock (MINEAGRIE) is modernizing animal production. Funded through FAO and government technical cooperation, this project aims to build capacity for MINEAGRIE and partners to promote and disseminate reproductive biotechnologies—specifically bovine embryo transfer and porcine artificial insemination—to improve livestock genetic quality, productivity, and competitiveness. The FAO Representation in Burundi is recruiting a National Expert in Animal Reproduction Health (NPP Grade 7) for an initial duration of 6 months with the possibility of extension.
