About the opportunity

The University of Vienna is seeking a motivated predoctoral university assistant (PhD candidate) to join the Experimental Quantum Physics and Gravity Group led by Prof. Markus Aspelmeyer. The position is part of the Quantum Science group within the Faculty of Physics, the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (quantA). The selected candidate will conduct research on the quantum control of levitated solid-state platforms, precision measurements of ultra-weak gravitational forces, and the interface between quantum physics and gravity. The position involves active participation in research, teaching, and administrative tasks, alongside completing a dissertation within the framework of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP).

Salary and benefits

  • Gross basic salary of EUR 2,832.08 per month for 30 hours per week, paid 14 times annually (higher if professional experience is credited)
  • Four-year fixed-term employment contract, initially limited to 1.5 years and automatically extended to 4 years if not terminated within the first 12 months
  • Membership in the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP) with access to over 600 free skills courses
  • Integration into major international research networks including VCQ and quantA
  • Central Vienna workplace with good public transport connections and an inspiring, fair international academic team environment

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • You have a solid Master's background in experimental physics with a direct focus on quantum optics, levitation, or optomechanics.
  • You are eager to pursue a structured PhD within a prominent European quantum hub and the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics.
  • You enjoy collaborative team environments that combine independent research with teaching and academic outreach.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position requires relocation to Vienna, Austria, for the duration of the four-year contract.
  • The contract is part-time at 30 hours per week, which is structured specifically to accommodate your PhD research and dissertation timeline.
  • The initial contract duration is limited to 1.5 years and extends to 4 years upon successful performance review within the first year.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This position offers an exceptional entry point for an aspiring physicist aiming to build a rigorous academic career in quantum research. By joining a high-profile group embedded in major European excellence clusters, you will gain hands-on experimental experience, high-level publication opportunities, and access to an extensive professional network.

Our take

This role is ideal for master's graduates in physics with a specialization in quantum optics or optomechanics who want to commit to a structured 4-year PhD journey in Vienna. It is less suitable for candidates seeking non-research roles, purely theoretical tracks, or permanent positions immediately.
