About the opportunity

The Photonic Integration group (PHI) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a leader in InP-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs), heterogeneous integration, and advanced nanofabrication. We are looking for a Research Technician / Process Line Technician to strengthen our shared cleanroom process capability at Nanolab@TU/e. This position is focused on process operations, stability, documentation, and continuous improvement of process technologies within the integrated photonics process line. The role is defined at the level of shared process capability rather than direct execution of individual project tasks, ensuring that key process modules are available, reproducible, and well-documented across multiple research projects.

Salary and benefits

  • Full-time employment with a 2-year initial contract, with potential for extension and long-term career development.
  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 8 (€3,537 to €4,673 gross per month).
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • Participation in the ABP pension scheme (TU/e pays 70% of the premium).
  • Favorable arrangement for additional holidays or a sabbatical.
  • Selection model for additional fringe benefits.
  • Flexible working hours for optimal work-life balance.
  • Unlimited access to the on-campus TU/e Student Sports Center at an affordable rate.
  • Free 24/7 access to OpenUp for mental health support and expert guidance.
  • Development opportunities including mentoring, workshops, and coaching.
  • Partially paid parental leave and reimbursement for commuting, working from home, and internet expenses.

Who can apply?

  • HBO-level education or higher in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong hands-on problem-solving skills gained during study or past work experience.
  • Affinity with cleanroom and microfabrication is an advantage, but not a hard requirement; motivated learners are welcome.
  • Good command of English and communication skills.
  • Ability to document data in a structured way.
  • Ability to organize work independently while contributing to a team-based research environment.
  • Non-EU applicants must check eligibility for a residence permit and work authorization with the Staff Immigration Team (staffimmigration@tue.nl) before applying.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Technical professionals with an HBO-level degree or higher in engineering or applied physics.
  • Individuals who enjoy hands-on work and are motivated to learn cleanroom and microfabrication processes.
  • Organized problem-solvers who excel at documenting technical data and maintaining process stability.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The role is on-site in Eindhoven, necessitating a move if you are not local.
  • While cleanroom experience is an advantage, the role requires a commitment to long-term process maintenance rather than just project-based fabrication.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This role is ideal for someone looking to build a career in high-tech infrastructure and cleanroom operations. It offers the stability of a two-year contract with potential for extension, providing a solid foundation for those aiming to become experts in integrated photonics process lines within a world-leading tech region.

Our take

This is a great opportunity for technically minded individuals who prefer operational and process-oriented work over traditional academic research; those seeking a purely research-focused role may find this infrastructure-heavy position less suitable.
