About the opportunity
The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) postdoctoral fellowships encourage early career scientists to broaden their research skills by moving into new areas of study while working in a new country. The program supports proposals for frontier, potentially transformative research in the life sciences, emphasizing interdisciplinary projects that challenge existing paradigms using novel approaches. Two types of fellowships are offered: Long-Term Fellowships (LTF) for applicants with a PhD on a biological topic, and Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF) for applicants holding a doctoral degree from a non-biological discipline (e.g., physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or computer sciences) with little to no prior experience in the life sciences.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Early-career scientists with a PhD looking to pivot into new research areas or interdisciplinary fields
- Researchers who are willing and able to relocate to a new country for a three-year fellowship
- Candidates with a strong track record of lead-author publications in English
What should you think carefully about?
- The fellowship requires moving to a country where you have not lived or worked for more than 12 months
- Applicants cannot apply to work in their country of nationality or the country where they obtained their PhD
- The fellowship is a 100% full-time commitment, prohibiting concurrent paid employment or other fellowships
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This fellowship is ideal for ambitious postdocs aiming to broaden their scientific horizons and challenge existing paradigms. It provides the financial support and international mobility necessary to establish a unique research niche in the life sciences.
Our take
This is a highly prestigious and competitive opportunity for mobile, early-career researchers; it is less suitable for those who are unable or unwilling to relocate internationally for a three-year term.
