About the opportunity

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is seeking a Postdoctoral researcher to explore multilayer and hybrid meta-optics to overcome the constraints of single-layer metasurfaces. Working within the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group and as part of the Heliopyxis collaboration (including the University of Twente and partners like ASML), the researcher will handle the full cycle from computational design and nanofabrication to optical experiments, targeting applications in semiconductor metrology, advanced microscopy, and sensing.

Salary and benefits

  • Gross base salary ranging from €4,422 to €5,760 per month (Scale 10).
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • Participation in the ABP pension scheme (TU/e pays 70% of the premium).
  • High-quality training programs on general skills, didactics, research, and valorization.
  • Unlimited access to the on-campus TU/e Student Sports Center at an affordable rate.
  • Free 24/7 mental health support via OpenUp for the employee and their family.
  • Partially paid parental leave.
  • Allowances for commuting, working from home, and internet costs.
  • Support from the TU/e Postdoc Association.
  • International candidate support: Staff Immigration Team, tax compensation (Expat Scheme), and moving expense compensation.
  • On-campus children's day care.

Who can apply?

  • PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Nanotechnology, or a related field.
  • Background in nanophotonics, meta-optics, or integrated photonics.
  • Hands-on experience with nanofabrication of photonic devices (e.g., electron-beam lithography, thin-film deposition, reactive-ion etching, multilayer processing, overlay, or stacking).
  • Strong experimental skills in optical characterization and alignment.
  • Experience with electromagnetic modeling and simulation (e.g., Lumerical, COMSOL, Tidy3D, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
  • Ability to manage complex projects to completion on schedule.
  • Experience with nanoimprint lithography or two-photon polymerization (2PP) is an advantage.
  • Experience with fiber-optic alignment and coupling to photonic devices is highly valued.
  • Experience with optimization or inverse design is appreciated.
  • A background in theoretical or experimental quantum optics or nonlinear optics is a plus.

Required documents

  • Cover letter highlighting motivation, research goals, and qualifications.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV), including a list of publications and contact information for 2-3 references.
  • A copy of 1-2 publications that best represent your research OR a 1-page summary of the PhD thesis.

When to apply

  • The vacancy is open until September 17, 2026.
  • The vacancy will remain open until the position is filled.

How to apply

  • Submit a complete application online via the apply-button.
  • Include a cover letter, CV, and representative publications or a thesis summary.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Researchers holding a PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Nanotechnology, or a related field.
  • Candidates with hands-on nanofabrication experience in photonic devices such as electron-beam lithography or thin-film deposition.
  • Specialists skilled in optical characterization, alignment, and electromagnetic modeling simulations like Lumerical or COMSOL.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position requires on-site work in Eindhoven, meaning relocation to the Netherlands is necessary if not already locally based.
  • Applicants must manage complex projects independently to completion on schedule.
  • Candidates should verify specific visa and relocation timelines with the staff immigration team support.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This postdoctoral role fits researchers seeking to advance high-performance optical systems through a full cycle of computational design, nanofabrication, and optical experiments. It provides a platform to contribute to advanced semiconductor metrology within a collaborative university and industry environment.

Our take

Postdoctoral researchers with a strong background in nanophotonics and hands-on nanofabrication should strongly consider applying before September 17, 2026. Those without specialized experience in optical metrology or simulation tools will find it less suitable.
