About the opportunity

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at DTU is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join a project aimed at understanding and modelling the influence of process parameters on the viscosity of concentrated cell broths. This research is critical for optimizing downstream operations like filtration in industrial enzyme production. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Associate Prof. Julian Kager at the DTU Pilot Plant and will participate in an external research stay at the Technical University Munich (TUM). The position offers a rewarding research environment, academic freedom, and the opportunity to contribute to innovative bioprocess engineering solutions.

Salary and benefits

  • 3-year full-time PhD position
  • Salary and appointment terms based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
  • Opportunity to work in an international, research-intensive environment
  • Access to the well-equipped DTU Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Pilot Plant

Who can apply?

  • Hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in (bio)chemical engineering, process engineering, bioengineering, biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a similar field
  • Interest in both experimental laboratory work and conceptual/theoretical modelling
  • Strong verbal communication and scientific writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with microbial cultivations, analytics, and numerical programming is an advantage

Required documents

  • Cover letter (motivating the application)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English)
  • Official description of the grading scale

When to apply

  • Application deadline: 2026-09-24 (23:59 Danish time)

How to apply

Additional information

  • The position starts on 2027-01-01 or by mutual agreement
  • Candidates may apply before obtaining their master's degree but must have received it before the start date
  • Open-source background checks may be conducted due to the nature of the research in critical technology
  • International applicants can find resources for moving to Denmark on the DTU website

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Candidates with a master's degree in (bio)chemical or process engineering
  • Individuals comfortable balancing experimental lab work with theoretical modeling
  • Researchers interested in industrial enzyme production and bioprocess optimization

What should you think carefully about?

  • Requires full-time, on-site presence at DTU Chemical Engineering
  • Involves an external research stay at the Technical University Munich (TUM)
  • Must be able to start by January 1, 2027

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This scholarship is perfect for a researcher looking to bridge the gap between academic modeling and industrial application. It offers the chance to work in a well-equipped pilot plant and gain international experience through collaboration with TUM.

Our take

Engineers with a strong interest in bioprocess optimization and a collaborative mindset should apply. Those who prefer purely theoretical work without laboratory components may find this role less suitable.
