About the opportunity

Are you interested in becoming a bioinformatics researcher working to improve the treatment and prognoses of colorectal cancer patients? Then this is the position for you. You will join the ongoing efforts of researchers at the Department of Health Technology at the Technical University of Denmark and the Center for Surgical Science (CSS) at the University Hospital Zealand in Køge. The overall aim of this project is to integrate phenotypic data from national population-wide registries with multi-omics data generated to characterize colorectal cancer samples and ultimately predict postoperative recurrence of the disease. You will work at the interface of artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and clinical research to develop novel computational models that integrate nationwide longitudinal health data with microbiome and genomic data.

Salary and benefits

  • Salary and appointment terms based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, with allowances agreed upon with the relevant union.
  • A 3-year period of full-time employment as a PhD student.
  • Participation in a rewarding and challenging job in an international research environment at a leading technical university.

Who can apply?

  • A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, data science, biomedical engineering, statistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and machine learning.
  • Experience handling and analyzing large-scale biological or health-related datasets.

Required documents

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale
  • All application materials must be combined into one single PDF file in English.

When to apply

  • Application deadline: 18 September 2026 (23:59 Danish time).
  • Starting date: 1 December 2026 or after mutual agreement.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Holders of a two-year master's degree in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, data science, biomedical engineering, statistics, or related quantitative fields.
  • Researchers with demonstrated experience in statistical analysis and machine learning.
  • Candidates experienced in handling and analyzing large-scale biological or health-related datasets.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is a 3-year full-time commitment based on-site in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark, meaning relocation is necessary if you live outside the commuting zone.
  • Applicants must combine all application materials into a single PDF in English before the strict September deadline.
  • Open-source background checks may apply given DTU's research scope in critical technology.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This project fits quantitative researchers eager to merge artificial intelligence with clinical bioinformatics to improve colorectal cancer prevention and post-operative prognoses.

Our take

Data scientists and bioinformaticians passionate about healthcare applications should apply, whereas candidates lacking machine learning or large dataset experience should look elsewhere.
