About the opportunity

DTU Chemical Engineering invites motivated candidates to apply for a PhD position at the interface between chemical engineering, process technology, and industrial pharmaceutical manufacturing. The project aims to develop and test continuous crystallization-in-flow concepts that make the production of pharmaceutical intermediates more robust and efficient. You will explore how flow-based crystallizers improve control over crystal quality, purity, and particle size distribution for downstream handling. Combining literature insights with hands-on laboratory equipment development, the project is carried out in close collaboration with H. Lundbeck, with a portion of the work taking place at their production site in Lumsås near Nykøbing Sjælland. You will join an ambitious, international research environment at a leading technical university.

Salary and benefits

  • Fully-funded 3-year PhD scholarship with a salary and appointment terms based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
  • Allowance agreed upon with the relevant union.
  • An opportunity to conduct impactful research in an international environment combining academic excellence with industrial collaboration with H. Lundbeck.

Who can apply?

  • Must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with crystallization, separation processes, reaction engineering, fluid flow, particle technology, or pharmaceutical process development is an advantage.
  • Motivated by experimental research and hands-on work with laboratory equipment, process setups, troubleshooting, and data analysis.
  • Good communication skills in English and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment with academic and industrial partners.

Required documents

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale

When to apply

  • Application deadline is 13 September 2026 (23:59 Danish time).
  • Expected starting date is around 1 January 2027 or after mutual agreement.

How to apply

  • Open the online application link ("Apply now").
  • Fill out the online application form.
  • Attach all required materials in English merged into one single PDF file.

Additional information

  • Applicants may apply prior to obtaining their master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.
  • As DTU works with research in critical technology subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Chemical or process engineering graduates motivated by hands-on laboratory work and experimental research.
  • Individuals interested in the intersection of academic research and industrial pharmaceutical manufacturing.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The project involves collaboration with H. Lundbeck, requiring work at their production site in Lumsås, which may necessitate travel or specific commuting arrangements.
  • Applicants must be aware that DTU conducts background checks on candidates due to the nature of research in critical technologies.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This scholarship is an excellent fit for a candidate aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical chemical engineering and real-world industrial application. It offers a structured three-year path to a PhD with direct exposure to pharmaceutical industry standards.

Our take

This is an ideal role for engineering students eager to apply their skills to pharmaceutical process development; those preferring purely theoretical research may find the industrial collaboration aspect less aligned with their interests.
