About the opportunity
A 3-year (5+3) or 4-year (4+4) PhD position in organic and supramolecular chemistry is available for a highly motivated candidate at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy (FKF) at the University of Southern Denmark. The position is funded by a DFF-Research Project 1 grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark – Natural Sciences. The project focuses on the design and synthesis of electroactive molecular machines capable of converting electrically controlled molecular motion into mechanical force, specifically investigating redox-induced shuttling in mechanically interlocked molecules to trigger the cleavage of covalent bonds and enable controlled cargo release.
Salary and benefits
- Salary determined in accordance with the applicable collective agreement based on objective and gender-neutral criteria.
- Fully funded PhD position supported by a DFF-Research Project 1 grant.
- Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow for a duration of three years under the 5+3 programme.
Who can apply?
- Hold a Master's degree (5+3 programme) or a Bachelor's degree (4+4 programme) in chemistry or a closely related field.
- Strong background in synthetic organic chemistry.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a research environment.
- Good communication skills and proficiency in written and spoken English.
Required documents
- A letter of motivation (maximum two pages), including a description of research interests and motivation for applying.
- A curriculum vitae, including a list of publications if applicable.
- Copies of relevant diplomas and academic transcripts, including grades, or a statement from the supervisor if the Master's diploma has not yet been received.
- Names and complete contact details (phone numbers and email) of at least two referees.
When to apply
- Position available from January 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.
- Application deadline is November 30, 2026, at 23:59 hours local Danish time.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- An ideal match for master's or bachelor's graduates in chemistry with a strong academic foundation in synthetic organic chemistry.
- Suited for researchers eager to work at the intersection of supramolecular chemistry, electrochemistry, and artificial molecular machines.
- Provides an opportunity to engage in high-impact interdisciplinary research within an established European university department.
What should you think carefully about?
- Relocation to Odense, Denmark, is required for the duration of the appointment.
- The position is fixed-term for three years with automatic termination at the end of the period.
- Applicants must compile and submit precise documentation, including supervisor statements if degrees are pending and contact details for at least two referees.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This fully funded PhD position offers a structured pathway to advance academic credentials and scientific expertise through independent research and supervision experience. It is well-suited for individuals aiming for a career in academic research or advanced chemical development within the fields of molecular machines and supramolecular systems.
Our take
Candidates with a solid background in synthetic organic chemistry and an interest in supramolecular systems should seriously consider applying before the November deadline. Those without relevant chemical synthesis experience or who are unable to relocate to Denmark will find the position less suitable.
