About the opportunity
At the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, the ultracold atom laboratory of CQT within the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology (QT/e) is developing neutral-atom quantum computing platforms based on Rydberg interactions. This project is part of the KAT-1 QDNL program on hybrid quantum computing and the European Photonics for Quantum (P4Q) Pilot Line. The selected candidate will test and integrate advanced photonic chips in a strontium-based neutral-atom quantum processor, develop integrated-photonics solutions for scalable control and readout, evaluate photonic-chip architectures, and realize quantum simulations. You will collaborate with project partners, including the UvA in Amsterdam and the wider P4Q consortium.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Master's degree holders in experimental physics with experience in cold atoms, lasers, or integrated photonics.
- Candidates motivated to work in an interdisciplinary team on quantum computing hardware.
- Individuals seeking a fully-funded, four-year PhD position with comprehensive benefits and training.
What should you think carefully about?
- The role requires a 10-15% time commitment to teaching tasks, which may impact research time.
- Applicants must be prepared for a pre-employment screening, including a knowledge security check.
- This is an on-site position in Eindhoven, requiring relocation for international candidates.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This PhD is a premier opportunity for an experimental physicist to contribute to cutting-edge quantum computing platforms. It provides a supportive environment for developing into an autonomous researcher while gaining experience in both academia and industry collaboration.
Our take
Experimental physicists with a passion for quantum mechanics and hardware development should apply. It is less suitable for those who prefer purely theoretical work or who are unable to commit to the required teaching duties.
