About the opportunity

Join the Neuromorphic Mechanics group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) as a PhD candidate to advance active adaptation in soft robotics. The project focuses on developing systematic methods to design physical control circuits—’fluidic neural networks’—that leverage nonlinear mechanics and multiphysics interactions to enable autonomous soft systems that respond dynamically to their environment without relying on software.

Salary and benefits

  • Gross base salary between €3,204 and €4,051 per month (Scale P).
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • Participation in the ABP pension scheme (TU/e pays 70% of the premium).
  • Full-time employment for four years with an intermediate assessment after nine months.
  • Allowance for commuting, working from home, and internet costs.
  • Access to high-quality training programs and the on-campus TU/e Student Sports Center.
  • Free 24/7 mental health support via OpenUp for the employee and their family.
  • On-campus children's day care.
  • Support for international candidates via a Staff Immigration Team and the Expat Scheme tax compensation.

Who can apply?

  • Excellent MSc degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied physics, microsystems, or another relevant engineering/scientific field.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English (C1 level).
  • Motivation to combine hands-on experiments, simulations, and theory.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and international team and interest in supervising BSc and MSc students.

Required documents

  • Cover letter (motivation and qualifications)
  • Curriculum vitae (including publications and three references)
  • BSc and MSc course grade transcripts

When to apply

  • The vacancy is open until August 30, 2026, or until the position is filled.

How to apply

  • Submit a complete application online via the apply button.
  • Include a cover letter describing motivation and qualifications.
  • Include a curriculum vitae with a list of publications and contact information for three references.
  • Include transcripts of BSc and MSc course grades.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • MSc graduates in mechanical, electrical, or physics-related fields with a passion for soft robotics.
  • Candidates who enjoy a multidisciplinary approach, combining theory, simulations, and hands-on experimentation.
  • Individuals interested in the intersection of nonlinear mechanics and autonomous system design.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is on-site in Eindhoven, requiring relocation if you are not currently in the area.
  • The role involves a four-year commitment, so you should be prepared for the duration and the intermediate assessment after nine months.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This PhD offers a unique chance to pioneer 'fluidic neural networks,' allowing you to contribute to the cutting edge of autonomous soft systems. It is a perfect fit for a candidate aiming to develop deep expertise in neuromorphic mechanics while gaining experience in supervising students and working in an international research team.

Our take

This position is highly recommended for ambitious engineering graduates looking to specialize in soft robotics; those who prefer software-heavy robotics or purely theoretical work may find the focus on physical control circuits less appealing.
