Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- You are passionate about international development, food security, and agricultural sustainability, and want to gain direct experience within the United Nations system.
- You possess strong communication skills, adapt easily to multicultural environments, and have a background or research interest relevant to FAO's strategic goals.
- You are self-funded and already reside in or have the means to secure legal residence/immigration status in your target African host country.
What should you think carefully about?
- This is a completely unpaid volunteer role; you must be prepared to fully self-fund your travel, housing, insurance, and daily living expenses for up to six months.
- You must independently secure the appropriate visa or residence status for the host country before starting, as FAO does not arrange this for volunteers.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, meaning you may not receive feedback if your application is not selected.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This volunteer program is an excellent fit for early-career professionals, recent graduates, or researchers looking to build hands-on experience in international development and agri-food systems. It offers a prestigious platform to expand your professional network within the UN system, apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges, and gain valuable cross-cultural teamwork skills that can bolster future applications for paid international organization roles.
Our take
Seriously consider applying if you are a self-motivated individual with a completed secondary education, meet the language requirements, and have the financial independence to support yourself during a six-month unpaid assignment in Africa. It is less suitable for those requiring immediate income, relocation assistance, or visa sponsorship to participate.
