About the opportunity
The Materials and Surface Engineering section in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DTU Construct) at the Technical University of Denmark seeks candidates for one permanent Researcher position in X-ray imaging and dislocation dynamics. The role combines experimental method development, user support, and independent research exploiting X-ray imaging data to advance the understanding of defect accumulation in plastically deformed metals through simulations. The successful candidate will divide time equally between two strong research environments: the Deformation and Failure in 4D project (funded by the Villum Foundation) and the 3D Imaging Centre (3DIM) at DTU. Responsibilities include developing advanced X-ray imaging methods, supporting researchers and external users, creating quantitative 3D/4D analysis workflows, carrying out independent research, pursuing simulation approaches like discrete dislocation dynamics, and contributing to teaching.
Salary and benefits
- Permanent, full-time researcher position within DTU's Tenure Track program.
- Appointment based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
- Negotiable salary supplements in accordance with DTU's salary structure for scientific staff.
- Participation in two strong research environments: Deformation and Failure in 4D and the 3D Imaging Centre (3DIM).
Who can apply?
- Hold a PhD degree or equivalent as a formal qualification.
- Experience with discrete dislocation dynamics simulations.
- Experience with advanced X-ray imaging, diffraction, or synchrotron-based characterization.
- Experience in building sample environments.
- Strong programming and data-analysis skills.
- Motivation to combine simulations and experiments to understand deformation and failure in metals.
- Good communication skills and interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations.
- Fluent in at least one of the working languages (Danish or English) with an expectation to master both in time.
Required documents
- Application (cover letter)
- Vision for teaching and research for the tenure track period
- CV including employment history, list of publications, H-index, and ORCID
- Teaching portfolio including documentation of teaching experience
- Academic Diplomas (MSc/PhD)
When to apply
- Posting Date: 18 August 2026
- Application Deadline: 1 September 2026 (23:59 Danish time)
- Starting Date: 1 October 2026 (or according to mutual agreement)

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- PhD holders with expertise in X-ray imaging, diffraction, or synchrotron-based characterization
- Researchers skilled in discrete dislocation dynamics simulations
- Candidates interested in a permanent tenure-track position at a leading technical university
What should you think carefully about?
- The role requires an on-site presence in Kgs. Lyngby
- Candidates must be prepared for security and export control background checks
- The position requires proficiency in both English and Danish over time
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This tenure-track position is perfect for an ambitious researcher aiming to establish a long-term academic career while bridging the gap between experimental X-ray imaging and computational material simulations. It offers the chance to lead research in two high-impact environments, providing significant professional growth.
Our take
Researchers looking for a permanent academic career path who possess a strong blend of experimental and simulation skills should apply; those not interested in teaching or long-term institutional commitments may find this less suitable.
