About the opportunity
The University of Twente’s Faculty ITC is seeking a Doctoral Candidate to advance the understanding of radiative exchanges in open-water, agricultural, natural, and urban environments. As part of the ITEM (Infrastructure Twente for Ecosystem Monitoring) initiative, the candidate will use state-of-the-art in-situ measurements and remote sensing technologies to combine ground observations with airborne and satellite imagery. The role involves observational modelling, coupling and upscaling of radiative observations, and examining bidirectional reflectance characteristics. Responsibilities include presenting research at conferences, publishing in scientific journals, and mentoring MSc students.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- MSc graduates in physics, meteorology, hydrology, or physical geography.
- Candidates with proven experience in quantitative earth observation analysis tools.
- Individuals with strong programming skills in C, C++, or Fortran.
What should you think carefully about?
- This is a full-time, on-site position in Enschede, requiring a commitment to physical presence for research and field data collection.
- The role involves a 6-9 month qualifier period, which is a standard but important milestone to consider.
- Applicants should ensure they have access to their academic transcripts and technical writing samples as required documentation.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This PhD position is ideal for an aspiring researcher focused on environmental monitoring and radiative transfer modeling. It offers a comprehensive four-year structure with dedicated support for professional development, making it a strong stepping stone for a career in academia or high-tech environmental science.
Our take
Highly qualified candidates with a background in quantitative earth observation and a passion for field-based research should apply; those unable to commit to an on-site, four-year doctoral program should look elsewhere.
