Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Mid-career professionals and researchers from Cambodia, Laos, or Thailand with specialized linguistic expertise in Thai, Lao, or Khmer.
  • Individuals with a strong background or interest in rare books, bibliography, cataloguing, and library curatorial practices.
  • Professionals seeking international exposure and looking to build networks across world-leading research libraries and heritage institutions.

What should you think carefully about?

  • Requires a 12-month commitment based physically at the British Library in the UK, meaning you must be able to take a leave of absence from current employment or studies.
  • PhD candidates enrolled at a UK, EU, or USA university are strictly ineligible to apply.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This fellowship is exceptionally well-suited for mid-career specialists aiming to transition into, or deepen their expertise in, international curatorial work, heritage conservation, and digital cataloguing methodologies. The structured 12-month stay provides a unique platform to gain hands-on experience with world-class collections, establish global professional networks, and produce high-profile research outputs.

Our take

Mid-career professionals and researchers from Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand with the required linguistic proficiency and a passion for Southeast Asian print culture should strongly consider applying. Those unable to relocate to the UK for a full year or who are currently studying at a UK, EU, or USA university should look for alternative opportunities.
