About the opportunity

FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) is an intensive, two-week study program in professional ethics and ethical leadership. The curriculum challenges Fellows to critically examine constructs, current developments, and issues raising ethical concerns in their professions in contemporary settings. Journalism Fellows examine the motivations and conduct of German and international journalists in promoting or misreporting Nazi policies, drawing on historical examples to grasp their roles and responsibilities as individuals with influence. Fellows spend two weeks in Berlin and Poland visiting key historical sites, participating in daily seminars led by specialized faculty, and engaging in interdisciplinary discussions with Medical and Clergy Fellows. FASPE Fellowships are fully funded so that financial ability does not affect participation.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Journalism students or early-career professionals with under 10 years of experience
  • Individuals interested in the intersection of professional ethics and history
  • Candidates with published or aired work from recognized news organizations

What should you think carefully about?

  • Requires travel to Berlin and Poland for a two-week intensive program
  • Involves interdisciplinary collaboration with non-journalism fellows
  • Focuses on historical reflection rather than traditional journalism skills training

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This fellowship serves as a unique developmental milestone for journalists aiming to deepen their understanding of moral responsibility and leadership. It offers a rare chance to engage in high-level ethical discourse alongside peers from other professional fields, fostering a more nuanced perspective on the impact of media in contemporary society.

Our take

Early-career journalists who are self-reflective and eager to explore the ethical dimensions of their craft will find this program highly rewarding; it is less suitable for those seeking purely technical or career-advancement workshops.
