Postdoc in Focusing Neutron Optics – DTU Energy

DTU Energy

About the opportunity

This postdoc project is part of a research project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, aiming to develop and implement a focusing neutron optics prototype, specifically a nested Wolter condenser. Neutrons are excellent probes for materials science and biotechnology, but neutron scattering and imaging studies are strongly flux-limited. The project seeks to increase the flux for a vast range of neutron methods by up to a factor 100. The consortium comprises DTU Energy, DTU Physics, CHEXS, the European Spallation Source (ESS), the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), and the Institute Laue Langevin (ILL). The ultimate goal is to demonstrate the functionality of the neutron focusing optics by imaging a real sample where increased neutron flux is crucial, such as following fast charge-discharge cycles of a Li-ion battery in real time.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • You hold a PhD in solid-state physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field.
  • You have hands-on experience with neutron or X-ray optics and reflectometry.
  • You are proficient in ray-tracing or wave propagation simulation software like McStas.
  • You have strong data analysis skills using Python.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is a fixed 2-year term, which may require planning for your next career step.
  • The work is strictly on-site at DTU Energy in Kgs. Lyngby.
  • You should be prepared for potential background checks related to critical technology research.
  • The role requires high self-motivation to meet the project's ambitious flux-increase goals.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This postdoc is ideal for a researcher aiming to make a significant impact in materials science and biotechnology instrumentation. It provides a unique opportunity to work within a high-profile international consortium and gain specialized expertise in neutron optics, which could be a major stepping stone for a career in advanced research facilities or academia.

Our take

Researchers with a strong background in optics and simulations who are looking to contribute to cutting-edge experimental physics should consider this role. It is less suitable for those seeking long-term permanent tenure or remote research opportunities.
