About the opportunity
The AIRC Non-Resident Research Fellowship brings early-career researchers into the work of the AI Research Centre at Woxsen University for an intensive four-month programme. Fellows develop research at the intersection of AI and the social sciences, translating academic work into rigorous, publishable outputs relevant to researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and the wider public. Each fellow associates with one of the Centre’s research clusters—ranging from work and governance to behavioural science and education—and develops a research agenda aligned with both the Centre’s priorities and their own doctoral or postdoctoral work. The programme is selective, prioritising research quality, methodological rigour, interdisciplinary thinking, and a commitment to responsible AI research.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Early-career scholars, doctoral candidates, and postdocs who want to bridge academic research with real-world policy and societal debates around AI
- Researchers who already have a publication record and want to expand their portfolio with structured policy and working papers
- Independent or international researchers seeking a formal academic affiliation without needing to relocate
What should you think carefully about?
- The position is completely unpaid and honorary, so applicants must be able to sustain themselves independently
- Balancing the required 8 to 10 hours per week alongside other academic or professional duties requires careful time management
- Relocation is neither required nor supported, which is ideal for remote engagement but provides no on-campus institutional immersion
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This fellowship serves as an excellent stepping stone for researchers looking to build an interdisciplinary profile, gain editorial mentorship, and produce citable outputs without pausing their existing doctoral studies or professional careers. It fits well into goals centred on academic writing, public engagement, and expanding a network in the field of AI governance and social impact.
Our take
This opportunity is strongly recommended for qualified early-career researchers and PhD students seeking flexible, remote institutional backing to publish impactful policy and working papers on AI. It is less suitable for individuals seeking financial compensation, funding support, or a physical campus experience.
