About the opportunity

The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy) at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a motivated researcher for a 2-year postdoctoral project. The role centers on experimental research in condensed matter physics, specifically investigating the role of topology in superconducting devices at ultra-low temperatures. The successful candidate will perform clean-room device fabrication, including electron beam lithography, and conduct detailed quantum transport measurements at milli-kelvin temperatures. This position involves close collaboration with material growers and integration into a dynamic research group focused on complex oxide heterostructures and electronic characterization. The work will be conducted at DTU’s on-campus clean-room facilities and DTU Energy’s dedicated dilution refrigerator laboratory.

Salary and benefits

  • 2-year full-time employment contract
  • Salary based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
  • Opportunity to negotiate salary supplements according to DTU's scientific staff structure
  • Access to state-of-the-art clean-room facilities and dilution refrigerator setups
  • Work in an international, research-focused academic environment

Who can apply?

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Nanoscience, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong background in semiconductor processing techniques such as e-beam lithography, metal evaporation, and etching
  • Proven experience in low-temperature quantum transport measurements
  • Ability to work independently and manage complex experimental tasks
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Required documents

  • Cover letter
  • CV
  • Academic diplomas (MSc and PhD in English)
  • List of publications

When to apply

  • Application deadline: 2026-11-05 (23:59 Danish time)

How to apply

  • Prepare all required documents as a single PDF file in English
  • Access the official job portal via the 'Apply now' link
  • Fill out the online application form
  • Upload the single PDF file containing all materials

Additional information

  • DTU conducts open-source background checks on qualified candidates due to research in critical technology subject to security and export control rules
  • The position is based at DTU Energy in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
  • Further information can be obtained from Prof. Thomas Jespersen at tsaje@dtu.dk

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Researchers with hands-on experience in clean-room fabrication and low-temperature quantum transport measurements will be highly competitive
  • Candidates who enjoy working in a collaborative, international academic environment will thrive in DTU's research culture
  • Those with a background in complex oxide heterostructures or semiconductor processing will find this role directly aligned with their expertise

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is a fixed-term 2-year contract, which requires careful planning for subsequent career steps
  • Applicants should be prepared for potential security and export control background checks as part of the hiring process
  • Relocation to Denmark is required for this on-site role, though DTU provides resources to assist with the transition

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This postdoctoral position is an excellent opportunity for early-career researchers to gain specialized experience in quantum device fabrication and low-temperature physics at a world-leading technical university. It provides a platform to publish high-impact research, expand professional networks within the European scientific community, and develop technical skills in advanced clean-room environments, all of which are valuable for future roles in academia or high-tech industry.

Our take

This role is ideal for experimental physicists or engineers looking to deepen their expertise in quantum materials and superconducting devices. Candidates who meet the technical requirements and are ready for a 2-year commitment in an elite research environment should apply before the November 2026 deadline.
