About the opportunity

The Chair of Classical Archaeology at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is seeking a Research Associate in the field of Archaeoinformatics. The successful candidate will serve as the scientific and technical interface for archaeoinformatics, managing the scientific recording, processing, and maintenance of data across various research areas, including the use of GIS and drone photography.

  • Opportunities for location-flexible work (mobile work and telecommuting).
  • Flexible working hours, taking into account study times.
  • Support for balancing family and professional life (e.g., childcare mediation, holiday offers, mobile children's room).
  • A practical research environment.
  • Workplace located in the Ruhr region metropolitan area.

Who can apply?

  • Master's degree in an archaeological subject, ideally Classical Archaeology.
  • Experience working with databases (recording finds, data maintenance, corrections, or adjustments).
  • Experience working with GIS.
  • Experience in recording SFMs and orthophotos.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Archaeologists with a Master's degree and specific technical experience in GIS and database management.
  • Individuals with practical experience in drone photography or SFM recording.
  • Team-oriented professionals interested in supporting excavation projects.

What should you think carefully about?

  • This is a 65% part-time position, which will impact total compensation and time availability.
  • The role is hybrid, but requires technical engagement with on-site excavations, which may involve travel.
  • Candidates should verify if they meet the specific requirements for the E13 TV-L pay grade.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This role is ideal for an archaeologist who enjoys the technical side of the field. It offers a unique opportunity to manage data and GIS infrastructure for a chair of Classical Archaeology, providing a stable environment to develop specialized technical skills that are highly valued in modern archaeological research.

Our take

This is a highly suitable role for an archaeology graduate with strong technical and GIS skills. It is less suitable for those seeking full-time employment or those who prefer purely theoretical research over technical support.
