About the opportunity

The Computational and Soft Matter Physics Group at the University of Vienna, led by Prof. Christos Likos, is seeking a predoctoral researcher to join their team. The position involves developing theoretical and computational models to study soft condensed matter systems, with a specific focus on the collective dynamics of topological polymers, such as polygonal DNA constructs, and the emergence of glassy behavior in concentrated solutions. The research will be conducted in close coordination with experimental work at the Jülich Research Center in Germany. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching at the Faculty of Physics, participate in group activities, and engage in public outreach. The appointment is for 3 years, with an initial 1.5-year term subject to extension.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Candidates with a strong background in statistical mechanics and specific experience in molecular simulation methods (MD/MC) will be highly competitive.
  • Researchers interested in the intersection of theoretical modeling and experimental validation, particularly those comfortable collaborating with international partners like the Jülich Research Center.
  • Individuals seeking a structured academic environment that provides both research independence and professional development through teaching and training opportunities.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position requires a 30-hour work week, which is a part-time arrangement by university standards, though it is a professional academic role.
  • The initial contract is for 1.5 years, with the extension to 3 years contingent on the employer's assessment during the first year.
  • Applicants should be prepared to relocate to Vienna, as the role involves active participation in group activities and teaching at the Faculty of Physics.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This position is an excellent opportunity for a recent Master's graduate in physics or chemistry to pursue a doctoral degree within a well-established research group. It offers a clear path to professional development through research, teaching, and administrative experience, while providing the financial stability of a university-contracted salary.

Our take

This role is ideal for early-career researchers with a solid foundation in statistical mechanics and molecular simulation who are looking to specialize in soft matter physics. Candidates who are comfortable with both independent research and collaborative teaching duties will find this a highly suitable environment.
