About the opportunity
The African German Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems and Applied Agricultural and Food Data Science (UKUDLA) invites applications for full-time master’s scholarships at two partner institutions: the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with support from the German Federal Foreign Office, the programme advances expertise in agri-food systems and applied data science. Research focuses on leveraging modern data-science approaches, statistical and machine learning methods, and multi-omics to improve agricultural productivity, sustainability, and food security amidst environmental and socioeconomic changes. Scholars will work in an interdisciplinary, international research environment.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Ideal for quantitative graduates in fields like data science, computer science, or agriculture aiming to apply computational tools to food security challenges.
- Strong fit for researchers seeking a fully funded interdisciplinary experience connecting data science, biology, and agricultural economics.
- Well-suited for candidates who can secure supervisor support early and commit to full-time on-site study in South Africa.
What should you think carefully about?
- Applicants must already reside in the African country of the host institution (as a national, permanent resident, or on a valid visa) at the time of application.
- Stricter academic cut-offs apply, requiring an overall average of at least 68% in a four-year degree completed within the last six years.
- Continuation into the second year of funding is strictly contingent on formal academic progress reviews and supervisor reports.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This scholarship supports ambitious quantitative and agricultural graduates in launching an academic or professional career focused on sustainable food systems in Africa. By combining financial support, living allowances, and specialized training modules, the programme helps build high-level competencies in data-driven agricultural research.
Our take
African graduates with a strong academic background in quantitative disciplines and a clear research focus on food systems and data science should strongly consider applying. It is less suitable for candidates outside Sub-Saharan Africa or those unable to meet the strict 68% grade threshold and full-time relocation requirements.
