About the opportunity
TradeRoots Africa is a flagship initiative by the ICC Centre of Entrepreneurship designed to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Africa overcome barriers to international trade. The program provides a structured, practical framework across six pillars: trade knowledge, trade finance, logistics, digital trade tools, mentorship, and business development. Participants progress through three tiers: Tier 1 (Trade foundations), Tier 2 (Digital and sector skills), and Tier 3 (Export acceleration). The program aims to empower businesses to compete regionally and globally by turning trade policy into actionable opportunities. It is not a grant or loan program, but a capacity-building ecosystem requiring active participation from business owners or senior managers.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Established African SMEs with a proven track record of at least two years and a clear ambition to expand into new regional or global markets.
- Business owners or senior managers who are hands-on and can dedicate consistent time to capacity-building and mentorship activities.
- Enterprises that already have a digital footprint and are looking to professionalize their export operations and compliance.
What should you think carefully about?
- This is a time-intensive commitment requiring at least 2 hours per week for several months; ensure your business operations can accommodate this schedule.
- The program is strictly for capacity building and networking; it does not provide direct financial grants or loans.
- Progression through the program is sequential; you must successfully complete Tier 1 to be eligible for the more advanced Tier 2 and Tier 3 support.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This program is an excellent fit for business leaders aiming to formalize their export strategy and integrate into the African Continental Free Trade Area. It is ideal for those who want to move beyond domestic sales and need the technical knowledge, digital tools, and professional network to navigate complex international trade regulations effectively.
Our take
If you are an established African SME owner ready to scale your operations and commit to a rigorous, multi-month training program, this is a high-value opportunity. It is less suitable for early-stage startups or those seeking immediate capital injections.
