About the opportunity

The Southern African-German Journalists’ Programme, named in honour of former Federal President Horst Köhler, is a multiyear effort to foster deeper understanding between Germany and Africa. Once a year, journalists from Southern Africa and Germany have the opportunity for a work exchange at a media outlet of their choice, producing content for their home newsroom. The programme starts with an introductory conference in Berlin, allowing participants to familiarise themselves with the host country before spending several weeks working with media houses and undertaking their own research.

Funding and benefits

  • Fixed grant payment of 3,500 Euro for Southern African delegates, intended to cover most travel, accommodation, and living expenses
  • Work exchange placement at a media outlet in Germany
  • Participation in an introductory conference in Berlin
  • Access to a worldwide alumni network and networking events

Who can apply?

  • Open to journalists from Southern Africa (SADC Member States and Kenya) and Germany
  • Must be between 25 and 40 years of age
  • Must regularly work for a media organisation
  • Above average English language skills are required

Additional information

  • No further payments beyond the 3,500 Euro grant will be made; delegates must use their own funds for any further costs

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Early- to mid-career journalists aged 25 to 40 seeking international reporting experience and cross-cultural exchange
  • Professionals with strong English proficiency who want to build a global network with German and African media peers
  • Writers and reporters eager to pitch and produce content directly for newsrooms in Germany

What should you think carefully about?

  • The fixed 3,500 Euro grant is expected to cover most expenses, but participants must be prepared to cover any costs exceeding this amount out of pocket
  • Work placement pay is not provided, and fellows must rely on the provided bursary during their stay
  • Reporting and living commitments require a significant time investment during July and August 2027

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This fellowship serves as a strong stepping stone for journalists looking to broaden their international perspective, establish cross-border professional networks, and gain hands-on newsroom experience abroad without committing to a long-term relocation.

Our take

Young, actively working journalists from eligible Southern African countries and Germany who meet the language and age requirements should seriously consider applying for this unique international exchange.
