About the opportunity

The Sahara CodeSwitch Africa Challenge is a voice AI competition hosted by Intron, inviting developers, startups, researchers, and builders across Africa and the diaspora to solve one of the biggest unsolved problems in voice AI: understanding code-switching, local accents, and real-world noise. Participants are tasked with creating or improving real-world voice AI applications that perform downstream tasks (agentic components) rather than simple speech-to-text conversion. Using Sahara’s new code-switching APIs, teams must benchmark their solutions against at least three speech models, including an Intron Sahara API. The challenge focuses on five high-impact tracks: Health, Legal & Public Services, Fintech, Telco & Customer Experience, Agriculture & Education, and Other High-Impact Use Cases.

Funding and benefits

  • Total cash prize pool of $10,000 USD.
  • Workshop Challenge Prize: $1,200 for the winner and $800 for the runner-up.
  • Partner Demo Day access for top teams to pitch to judges, sponsors, and funders.
  • Greater visibility with sponsors, judges, funders, and ecosystem partners.
  • Potential pilot or deployment conversations.
  • Sahara API credits to continue building.
  • Recognition across Intron and partner channels.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Developers, AI/ML researchers, and startups across Africa and the diaspora.
  • Those skilled in creating agentic voice AI components rather than simple transcription.
  • Builders interested in high-impact sectors like Fintech, Health, or Agriculture.

What should you think carefully about?

  • This is a competition with a cash prize pool rather than a traditional job.
  • Participants must benchmark their solution against at least three speech models.
  • A working prototype and video demo are required for final submission.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This challenge is an excellent way for AI builders to gain visibility with sponsors and funders, test their APIs against real-world noise and accents, and potentially secure pilot or deployment conversations.

Our take

AI developers and researchers across Africa and the diaspora who can build a working prototype to solve code-switching challenges should apply, while those only capable of speech-to-text conversion are less suitable.
