About the opportunity
The University of Twente is seeking a Postmaster/Postdoctoral Researcher for the LiSa (Lithium refining via Salt-assisted crystallization) project. This collaborative initiative involving Nobian, Back-to-Battery, Demcon, ISPT, and the University of Twente aims to develop an innovative low-carbon process for producing battery-grade lithium hydroxide from recycled lithium chloride brines through continuous crystallization and electrochemical integration. The successful candidate will develop a predictive process model for the lithium refining process and support the experimental development of the continuous crystallization process, combining thermodynamic modelling, process simulation, and crystallization engineering.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Candidates with a Master or PhD in Chemical Engineering.
- Individuals with a solid background in process simulation and chemical thermodynamics.
- Researchers with specific experience in crystallization or industrial process modeling.
What should you think carefully about?
- The role is based in Enschede and requires a hybrid working arrangement, so proximity to the university is necessary.
- The position involves collaboration with industrial partners, which may require a different pace and focus than purely academic research.
- Applicants should verify their experience with specific tools like Aspen Custom Modeler, as this is preferred.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This position is ideal for a researcher looking to apply chemical engineering expertise to sustainable, real-world industrial challenges. It offers the chance to work on a high-impact project involving battery recycling, which is highly relevant for those interested in the future of energy storage and low-carbon industrial processes.
Our take
Chemical engineers with a focus on process modeling and a desire to work on sustainable technology should apply; those looking for purely theoretical or non-industrial research may find the project scope less aligned with their interests.
