About the opportunity

The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a 3.5-year project focused on endocrine disruption in fish. The research aims to develop histopathological and behavioral endpoints, contributing to the EU Partnership for Risk Assessment of Chemicals (PARC), the Danish EPA, and SDU. The role involves bridging experimental ecotoxicology with regulatory chemical risk and hazard assessment. The successful candidate will join the Ecotoxicology group and engage in teaching and supervision at the university level. SDU provides support for international staff through its International Staff Office, including assistance with relocation, taxation, and language training.

Salary and benefits

  • 3.5-year full-time postdoctoral research position
  • Salary determined by the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC)
  • Danish language training provided for foreign applicants
  • Support from the SDU International Staff Office regarding salary, taxation, and housing

Who can apply?

  • PhD degree in Environmental Toxicology
  • Hands-on experience in assessing endocrine disruption properties of chemicals using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) model
  • Documented experience in histopathology techniques (tissue preparation, microtome sectioning, cryosectioning, H&E staining, microscopy, and image analysis)
  • Extensive experience with OECD fish test protocols (e.g., OECD TG 236, OECD TG 210)
  • Experience in behavioral assessment in zebrafish eleutheroembryos
  • Experience in teaching and supervision at the university level
  • Strong proficiency in written and verbal English

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Candidates with a specialized background in regulatory toxicology and EU chemical frameworks like REACH or OECD guidelines.
  • Researchers with extensive, hands-on experience in zebrafish models and specific histopathology techniques.
  • Academics looking to balance high-level research with university teaching and student supervision responsibilities.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is a fixed-term contract of 3.5 years, which requires planning for subsequent career steps.
  • Relocation to Odense, Denmark, is necessary as the role is on-site.
  • The application process is highly specific regarding required documentation; ensure your PhD status and publication list are clearly formatted.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This role is an excellent opportunity for a researcher aiming to bridge the gap between academic experimental ecotoxicology and practical regulatory policy. It provides a stable, multi-year platform to build a strong publication record while gaining experience in EU-level chemical risk assessment partnerships.

Our take

This position is ideal for a PhD-qualified environmental toxicologist with specific expertise in zebrafish models and regulatory frameworks. It is less suitable for those without prior experience in histopathology or those seeking a permanent, non-fixed-term academic role.
