About the opportunity

This is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral position for one year at the Department of Materials and Production in Aalborg, starting on 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. As a postdoc, you will contribute to research and teaching within advanced modelling, optimization and design of composite and lightweight structures for applications such as wind turbine blades. You will be part of the Solid and Computational Mechanics research group, combining independent research responsibilities with active participation in teaching and supervision at bachelor and master levels. The role involves developing and applying finite element methods for modelling static strength, fatigue behaviour, and structural optimization.

Salary and benefits

  • Salary and terms of employment in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement)
  • Opportunities to participate in relevant conferences and workshops and build an international network
  • Support for learning Danish during employment, including Danish language courses offered as part of the employment
  • Mutual probationary period of 3 months

Who can apply?

  • Hold a PhD degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field
  • Strong background in solid and computational mechanics
  • Solid experience with finite element methods and formulation, implementation, and critical assessment of numerical models for structural analysis
  • Documented experience with structural optimization (sizing, shape, and topology optimization of composite and sandwich structures)
  • Comfortable working with scientific and high-performance computing
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, both in writing and orally

Required documents

  • Application, stating reasons for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Diplomas (master's degree diploma and PhD diploma)
  • List of publications (maximum of five publications to be taken into account)
  • Documentation of teaching qualifications if relevant
  • Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations etc.
  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • You hold a PhD in mechanical engineering or a closely related field with a strong background in solid and computational mechanics.
  • You have documented experience with structural optimization, including sizing, shape, and topology optimization of composite and sandwich structures.
  • You possess solid experience using finite element methods and formulating, implementing, and critically assessing numerical models for structural analysis.
  • You are comfortable working with scientific and high-performance computing and can communicate clearly in English.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is fixed-term for one year and located on-site in Aalborg, Denmark, meaning relocation to Denmark is required unless you are already local.
  • The role involves a mutual probationary period of 3 months and requires active participation in teaching and supervision at bachelor and master levels alongside research.
  • Salary and terms follow the AC collective agreement, but specific salary figures are not provided in the text and should be verified directly with the university.
  • Applicants must submit up to five publications and relevant diplomas, and the hiring process includes a shortlisting stage and a potential risk assessment.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This one-year postdoctoral position at Aalborg University offers a strong platform if your near-term plans involve gaining specialized academic experience in advanced modelling and optimization of lightweight structures like wind turbine blades. By combining independent research responsibilities with teaching, supervision, and conference participation, the role supports building an international network and enhancing your academic profile in computational mechanics. Additionally, institutional support for learning Danish can help you integrate locally if you are aiming for a longer-term stay in Denmark.

Our take

Researchers with a solid background in finite element methods and composite structures who want a one-year academic role in Denmark should seriously consider applying. Those seeking permanent positions immediately or who are unable to relocate on-site to Aalborg will find this opportunity less suitable.
