About the opportunity
The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is seeking a Postdoctoral researcher to develop and validate an AI-enhanced, solvent-based recycling process for complex plastic waste streams, such as multilayer packaging and e-waste. Working within the EKKO Circular Plastics project in collaboration with the company Exergy, the researcher will focus on the selective recovery of high-value polymers (e.g., PET, PS, PC, ABS) with high purity and yield, while minimizing solvent consumption and energy demand. The position is based in the Polymer Performance Materials group under the supervision of Prof. Željko Tomović in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Researchers with a PhD in polymer or organic chemistry seeking to apply expertise to sustainable recycling.
- Candidates with a hands-on mentality who enjoy collaborative, application-oriented research environments.
- Individuals interested in working with industrial partners like Exergy to solve complex plastic waste challenges.
What should you think carefully about?
- The role is strictly on-site in Eindhoven, requiring relocation if you are not already based in the region.
- The position is fixed-term, so you should evaluate how this aligns with your long-term academic or industry career trajectory.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This position is an excellent opportunity for a researcher looking to bridge the gap between fundamental polymer chemistry and industrial application. It provides a stable, well-funded environment to build a portfolio in circular plastics while gaining experience in AI-enhanced process development, which is increasingly vital in modern chemical engineering.
Our take
This is a strong fit for chemists eager to tackle real-world sustainability problems in a well-supported Dutch university setting; those seeking purely theoretical research may find the industrial focus less aligned with their interests.
