About the opportunity

The PhD position at DTU Electro is part of the RESSORT project, a European research initiative dedicated to advancing soft and adaptive robotics. The research focuses on overcoming the limitations of rigid robotic systems by integrating compliant structures, variable stiffness, and intelligent control strategies. The successful candidate will design and model robotic systems, develop control strategies for changing mechanical configurations, and validate these technologies through simulations and experiments on platforms such as adaptive and morphing aerial systems. This role offers the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary, international environment at a leading technical university, contributing to innovative solutions in robotics while collaborating with academic and industrial partners.

Salary and benefits

  • Full-time employment for a period of 3 years
  • Salary based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
  • Opportunity to conduct research in an international, collaborative environment
  • Access to advanced research facilities and support for scientific dissemination

Who can apply?

  • Two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent academic qualification
  • Strong background in mechatronics, robotics, mechanical engineering, control engineering, or a closely related field
  • Solid competence in mechanical design, dynamic modelling, and control of robotic systems
  • Good programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink, C++, and/or Python
  • Motivation to work independently and contribute to a multidisciplinary research team

Required documents

  • Cover letter motivating the application
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official grading scale description
  • Brief description (max one page) of relevant technical or research projects highlighting individual contributions to mechanical design, modelling, control, and experimental validation

When to apply

  • Application deadline: 2026-11-05 (23:59 Danish time)

How to apply

  • Prepare all required materials as a single PDF file in English
  • Access the official application portal via the 'Apply now' link on the job page
  • Complete the online application form and upload the single PDF file

Additional information

  • Starting date is 1 February 2027 or by mutual agreement
  • Candidates may apply before obtaining their master's degree but must have received it before starting
  • Open-source background checks may be conducted due to the nature of research in critical technology

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Candidates with a strong foundation in both mechanical design and control theory who enjoy hands-on experimental prototyping.
  • Researchers interested in the intersection of soft robotics, variable-stiffness mechanisms, and aerial systems.
  • Individuals seeking to contribute to a high-impact European research project within a top-tier technical university.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position requires a 3-year commitment and relocation to Denmark if not already based there.
  • The application must be submitted as a single, consolidated PDF file; incomplete or multi-file submissions may not be considered.
  • Applicants must ensure their academic background aligns with the specific technical requirements in mechatronics and control engineering.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This PhD position is an excellent opportunity for early-career researchers aiming to establish themselves in the field of soft robotics. It provides a structured 3-year path to a doctoral degree while offering the stability of a full-time employment contract at a globally recognized institution. The role is ideal for those looking to bridge the gap between theoretical modelling and practical, real-world robotic implementation.

Our take
