About the opportunity
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) offers a 3-year PhD position within the Centre for Auditory Neuroscience at DTU Health Tech. The project investigates the spatial and temporal relationships between vascular and sensorineural pathology in the cochlea during healthy ageing and age-related conditions such as dementia and metabolic syndrome. The work involves developing preclinical immunolabelling and light-sheet microscopy imaging pipelines using rodent models, quantitative image analysis, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of neurobiologists, cognitive neuroscientists, acousticians, computer scientists, and medical doctors. Scholars will complete 30 ECTS of coursework and undertake a research stay of three to six months at a partner laboratory.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Ideal for master's graduates in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, biology, or medicine who want to transition into advanced 3D microscopic imaging.
- Strong match for candidates with prior hands-on experience using laboratory rodents and immunofluorescent tissue labelling.
- Well-suited for researchers eager to work in an interdisciplinary team spanning neurobiology, computer science, and clinical medicine.
What should you think carefully about?
- Requires full-time relocation to Denmark for the duration of the 3-year PhD contract.
- Involves direct hands-on experimental work with rodent models, which may not align with purely computational or clinical research interests.
- Candidates must manage rigorous project milestones including 30 ECTS of coursework and a mandatory external research stay.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This fully funded 3-year PhD position provides an excellent pathway for individuals seeking to build a rigorous academic research career in auditory neuroscience or biomedical imaging. The combination of wet-lab rodent models, light-sheet microscopy, and advanced quantitative image analysis builds highly transferable technical skills for both academic and industry roles in medical technology.
Our take
This opportunity is strongly recommended for qualified master's graduates with a background in life sciences or engineering who want to pursue cutting-edge hearing research in a top European technical university. Candidates without animal research experience or those unable to relocate to Denmark should consider other opportunities.
