About the opportunity

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen is seeking a PhD candidate to join the research group led by Assistant Professor Craig S. Day. The project, titled ‘Sustainable, earth-abundant transition-metal-catalysed reactions for the synthesis of fine-chemicals,’ is funded by the ERC Starting grant Light-CAT. The research aims to develop novel homogeneous transition metal-catalyzed reactions using earth-abundant metals like Mo, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu to transform feedstock chemicals such as CO2 and biomass into high-value products. The successful candidate will employ a mechanistically guided approach combining kinetics, organometallic synthesis, and method development to advance sustainable chemical construction.

Salary and benefits

  • Full-time employment as a PhD fellow for up to 3 years (regular program) or up to 5 years (integrated program).
  • Salary and terms of employment according to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
  • Opportunity to work in a vibrant, multicultural research group with consistent feedback and support from the supervisor.
  • Access to high-impact research environments and opportunities for international research stays.
  • For the integrated program: combination of state education grants and salary for work (teaching/supervision) until the MSc degree is obtained.

Who can apply?

  • Candidates must have a background in organic chemistry, methodology development, organometallic chemistry, mechanistic chemistry, or electrochemistry.
  • For the regular PhD program (5+3 scheme): Must hold a degree equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.
  • For the integrated MSc and PhD program (3+5 scheme): Must hold a degree equivalent to a relevant Danish bachelor’s degree and be eligible for enrollment in the faculty's MSc program in Chemistry.
  • Proficiency in English is required.
  • Candidates must demonstrate professional qualifications relevant to the project, relevant publications, and work experience.

Required documents

  • Motivated letter of application (max. one page).
  • Curriculum vitae including education, experience, and language skills.
  • Original diplomas for Bachelor of Science or Master of Science and transcript of records (with authorized English or Danish translation).
  • Publication list (if available).
  • Reference letters (if available).

When to apply

  • Application deadline: October 30, 2026, 23:59 GMT +1.
  • Expected start date: February 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.

How to apply

  • Prepare all required documents in English.
  • Submit the application electronically via the official job portal link provided on the vacancy page.

Additional information

  • The position is part of the research project 'Light-CAT' (Ligand-Driven C–H Activation: Sustainable Catalysis by Design).
  • The recruitment process involves an academic assessment by an unbiased expert assessor.
  • The University of Copenhagen is part of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Candidates with a strong foundation in synthetic organic chemistry or mechanistic studies will find this project highly aligned with their expertise.
  • Researchers interested in sustainable chemistry and the development of earth-abundant metal catalysts will benefit from the cutting-edge focus of the Day group.
  • Applicants seeking a structured, well-supported PhD environment with access to international collaborative networks and high-impact publishing opportunities.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position requires a high level of academic rigor and the ability to manage both research and teaching responsibilities.
  • Applicants must ensure their previous degrees meet the specific Danish equivalency requirements, which may require checking the provided assessment databases.
  • The integrated program involves a transition from a grant-based model to a salary-earning model, which requires careful financial planning during the initial years.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This PhD position is an excellent opportunity for early-career researchers aiming to establish themselves in the field of sustainable catalysis. Whether you are looking to complete a standard PhD or enter an integrated MSc/PhD track, the role provides the necessary infrastructure, mentorship, and funding to conduct high-level research that addresses global sustainability challenges.

Our take

Highly recommended for motivated chemistry graduates with a passion for organometallic synthesis and sustainable methodology. Candidates should be prepared for a competitive selection process and ensure all documentation is strictly compliant with the university's requirements.
