About the opportunity
This interdisciplinary PhD project focuses on uncovering the relationship between intermolecular interactions, supramolecular morphology, and the functionality of organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs). These materials are vital for future technologies like neuromorphic computing, bioelectronics, and energy storage. You will develop operando characterization methods, specifically spectroelectrochemistry, to probe dynamic spectral signatures during electrochemical doping. Working under Prof. Tom van der Pol, you will design switchable supramolecular systems and contribute to a mechanistic framework for next-generation adaptive electronics. The project is part of a vibrant scientific community, including the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Ideal for researchers with a strong background in spectroscopy or electrochemistry who want to apply these skills to functional materials.
- A great match for candidates who enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration and want to bridge the gap between fundamental chemistry and device-relevant properties.
- Well-suited for those who are motivated by both high-level research and the opportunity to gain teaching experience.
What should you think carefully about?
- The role includes a mandatory teaching requirement of up to 15% per year, which may reduce time available for pure research.
- The position is subject to a knowledge security check, which is a standard but formal part of the Dutch university hiring process.
- The initial contract is for four years but includes a critical assessment at the nine-month mark.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This PhD offers a robust path for someone aiming to become an autonomous researcher in the fields of materials science or bioelectronics. It provides not only technical expertise in operando characterization but also professional development through teaching and interdisciplinary networking within the Brainport Eindhoven ecosystem. It is an excellent opportunity for those looking to transition from a Master's degree into a specialized academic or R&D career focused on next-generation computing and sustainable technology.
Our take
Seriously consider this if you have a Master's in a relevant physical science and want a fully funded, well-supported research career in the Netherlands. It is less suitable for those who prefer a research-only role without teaching responsibilities or those who do not have a background in material characterization.
