Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Hold a BSc and MSc degree in Chemistry with a focused academic background in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and/or catalysis.
  • Possess essential hands-on experience in the synthesis and characterization of organic molecules alongside strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Thrive in collaborative, international research environments and are comfortable with a hybrid working structure that includes mandatory teaching duties and a six-month research stay abroad.

What should you think carefully about?

  • You must relocate to the TU/e campus in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and note that candidates currently residing in Iran are ineligible due to the temporary closure of the Dutch embassy in Tehran.
  • Expect to dedicate 10% to 15% of your employment time to teaching responsibilities rather than exclusively conducting research.
  • Your appointment is contingent on passing an initial nine-month assessment and potential pre-employment screening, such as a knowledge security check.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This four-year fully funded PhD position serves as an excellent vehicle for advancing an academic or specialized industrial research career in sustainable materials. By combining fundamental photochemistry, polymer science, and materials chemistry within an international framework—including an integrated six-month research stay at the Technical University of Denmark—the role allows you to build a robust publication record, expand your professional network across European technical institutions, and gain valuable university teaching experience.

Our take

Chemistry graduates with specific synthesis expertise looking for a structured, funded European doctoral track should seriously consider applying, while those who want to avoid teaching or cannot relocate to the Netherlands will find it less suitable.
