About the opportunity
What new physics emerges when a THz interface changes on the timescale of the wave itself? In this PhD project, you will develop dynamically modulated THz interfaces and explore frequency conversion, beam steering, and nonreciprocal propagation through electromagnetic design, device development, and THz experiments. The sub-THz regime is emerging as an important platform for future wireless communication, radar, and sensing, but controlling these waves dynamically remains a major challenge. In this project, you will explore a different regime: space–time interfaces whose electromagnetic response changes while the wave is interacting with them. You will span the full cycle from concept to experiment, working in the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group at TU/e, with a 6-month research stay at Université de Namur and a 3-month stay at TNO.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Strong academic background in physics, engineering, or materials science
- Experience with numerical modeling tools like COMSOL, MATLAB, or Python
- Interest in high-speed THz beam control and electromagnetic design
What should you think carefully about?
- Must comply with MSCA mobility rules regarding residency in the Netherlands
- Requires international travel for research stays in Belgium and with TNO
- Applicants currently residing in Iran are ineligible due to embassy closures
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This four-year PhD position is ideal for a researcher aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical electromagnetic design and experimental device development. By participating in the SPARK Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions network, you will gain access to high-quality training and international collaboration, positioning you well for a future career in advanced photonics, wireless communication, or semiconductor research.
Our take
Candidates with a solid foundation in wave physics who are eager to work across the full cycle of concept-to-experiment should apply. Those unable to meet the specific EU mobility requirements or who already hold a doctoral degree should not apply.
