About the opportunity

The Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Awards Program supports aspiring international journalists who are currently enrolled as college juniors, seniors, or graduate students. In a typical year, the Foundation awards 18 grants to help students launch careers in foreign reporting rather than working as mid-career or local journalists. Recipients receive either a financial scholarship to support independent reporting projects or a fellowship enabling them to work inside foreign bureaus of premier news agencies like the Associated Press, Reuters, or Bloomberg. Four awards specifically focus on international business and economic reporting. Beyond financial funding, winners are integrated into a prominent professional network of global foreign correspondents.

Funding and benefits

  • $3,000 scholarship to support independent reporting work, or a $4,000 fellowship to fund an assignment at an international bureau of a major news organization (such as Reuters, Associated Press, or Bloomberg)
  • Four reserved awards dedicated specifically to international business or economic coverage
  • Paid participation in the annual Scholar Awards reception and a two-day series of training and networking events in New York City in March 2027
  • Lifelong access to the OPC Foundation professional alumni network and community of foreign correspondents

Who can apply?

  • Must be a college junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled in an accredited degree program at the application deadline
  • Open to students of any nationality studying at North American colleges or universities, as well as American students enrolled abroad
  • Must demonstrate a clear commitment to pursuing a career in international journalism rather than domestic local reporting
  • Targeted at early-career journalists launching their careers rather than mid-career professionals
  • Applicants are not required to have previously traveled abroad; domestic reporting on international themes, immigrant communities, or refugee issues is fully eligible

Required documents

  • One-page autobiographical cover letter explaining how you developed an interest in journalism and international issues/regions, how the award will further your career, and addressing any career gaps
  • One-page resume highlighting prior journalism experience, foreign language abilities, multimedia skills, overseas visa/passport status, and published or unpublished work
  • One reformatted journalism work sample in print (600–800 words), photojournalism (PDF or online portfolio link accompanied by a ~500-word contextual essay), or video/audio (2–7 minute streamable link accompanied by a ~500-word contextual essay explaining your role)
  • English translation if the original work sample was produced in another language
  • Single consolidated file in .pdf or .docx format (maximum 10MB) named 'Last name_First name'

When to apply

  • Application deadline: Sunday, November 15, 2026
  • Notification of selected winners: Mid-January 2027
  • Mandatory Scholar Awards reception and training events: March 2027 in New York City

How to apply

  • Select your primary journalism medium (print, photo, video, or audio) and prepare your work sample according to the length and formatting instructions.
  • Draft your one-page autobiographical cover letter and your one-page journalism resume.
  • Ensure any use of generative AI in your reporting materials is responsible, minor, and fully disclosed.
  • Combine your cover letter, resume, and work sample into a single .pdf or .docx document under 10MB, named Last name_First name.
  • Submit the completed file via the OPC Foundation online submission portal before the November 15, 2026 deadline.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Enrolled undergraduate juniors, seniors, and graduate students who can demonstrate strong original reporting on international topics, diaspora communities, or cross-border issues.
  • Early-career reporters seeking an established springboard into international news agencies such as Reuters, the AP, or Bloomberg.
  • Students with specialized knowledge or reporting clips in global economics, trade, finance, energy, or public health who can compete for the dedicated business reporting awards.

What should you think carefully about?

  • Applicants must be available to travel to New York City in March 2027 to attend the mandatory two-day awards reception and training program.
  • The program is strictly oriented toward launching careers in foreign reporting; students planning to work strictly in local or domestic news are less aligned.
  • Work samples must be reformatted into a standalone text document rather than submitted as web links or raw news clips.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This program offers an accelerated launchpad for student journalists aiming to establish themselves in foreign reporting. Whether you want to fund an ambitious independent investigative project or gain entry into an overseas bureau of a top global wire service, the financial backing and industry access provide immediate credibility and long-term mentorship.

Our take

Current degree-seeking students at North American institutions or American students abroad with a strong commitment to international news should make this award a top priority. It is not suitable for mid-career professionals or reporters focused exclusively on domestic local journalism.
