About the opportunity

The purpose of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and strength of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. Operating since 1952, the program recognizes and supports outstanding undergraduate and graduate students pursuing full-time, research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. GRFP recruits and funds individuals who demonstrate the potential to make significant contributions in STEM disciplines at accredited, nonprofit U.S. institutions of higher education.

Funding and benefits

  • Three years of financial support provided over a five-year fellowship period.
  • Annual living stipend of $37,000 for each supported fellowship year.
  • Cost of Education allowance of $16,000 paid directly to the institution of higher education in lieu of all tuition and mandatory fees per fellowship year.
  • Fellowship portability allowing awardees to transfer to a different accredited, nonprofit U.S. institution after completing the first fellowship year.

Who can apply?

  • Must be pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time, research-based master's or doctoral degree in an NSF-supported STEM field.
  • Must be enrolled at or admitted to an accredited, nonprofit institution of higher education in the United States.
  • Open to undergraduate seniors and eligible graduate students in eligible STEM disciplines.
  • Applicants may submit only one application per annual competition.
  • Additional detailed eligibility criteria are specified in solicitation NSF 26-526.

Required documents

  • Full proposal submitted in accordance with the NSF GRFP solicitation (NSF 26-526) and the PAPPG guidelines.

When to apply

  • Life Sciences deadline: October 19, 2026, by 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
  • Computer and Information Science and Engineering; Materials Research; Psychology; and Social Sciences deadline: October 20, 2026, by 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
  • Engineering deadline: October 22, 2026, by 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
  • Chemistry; Geosciences; Mathematical Sciences; and Physics and Astronomy deadline: October 23, 2026, by 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

How to apply

  • Review the complete program guidelines and eligibility rules set forth in solicitation NSF 26-526 and the NSF PAPPG.
  • Prepare the proposal according to NSF research security policies and field-specific guidelines.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Undergraduate seniors or early-stage graduate students planning to undertake research-focused STEM master's or doctoral studies at a U.S. institution.
  • Researchers seeking independent, portable financial support that allows them to select their graduate institution and research mentor flexibly.
  • Applicants with a strong track record and clear potential to contribute broadly to NSF-supported scientific and engineering priorities.

What should you think carefully about?

  • Strict submission deadlines vary by academic discipline across late October and close promptly at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
  • Applicants are strictly limited to one application per annual competition.
  • Fellowships can only be hosted at accredited, nonprofit U.S. institutions of higher education and require full-time enrollment in a research-based STEM degree.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This fellowship is exceptionally well suited for emerging scientists and engineers aiming to fully fund their graduate degree while gaining prestige and autonomy in their research. Because the award provides three years of tuition support and a substantial living stipend across a five-year window, it gives recipients the security to focus intensely on advanced research, publish findings, and develop independent scholarly agendas.

Our take

Early-career STEM researchers entering or enrolled in research-based U.S. graduate degree programs should prioritize applying for the GRFP. It is less suitable for individuals pursuing non-research professional master's degrees or studies outside eligible STEM disciplines.
