About the opportunity

The Next-Geo program is a pan-European research and training initiative for junior researchers focusing on geoeconomics, coordinated by the Kiel Institute in cooperation with CEPR, Bocconi University (IEP), and the Oxford University Department of Economics, and funded by Stiftung Mercator. Bringing together a competitive cohort of around 10 junior scholars annually, the 1-year add-on program complements training at participants’ home institutions with specialized academic lectures, research training, project mentoring, policy advisory training, and networking opportunities. Research topics span economic security, trade fragmentation, industrial policy, sanctions design, global financial flows, climate transition, and defense economics. Participants retain their home positions while gaining access to dedicated student research assistants, data purchases, AI tokens, and fully covered travel and accommodation for in-person modules across Europe.

Funding and benefits

  • Rigorous coursework and lectures on the research frontier in geoeconomics from internationally renowned experts and Kiel Institute researchers.
  • Project mentoring and feedback from leading senior scholars to improve research or policy projects.
  • Research support via access to a dedicated pool of four student research assistants hired at the Kiel Institute.
  • Funding for data purchases and AI tool subscriptions (such as Claude or OpenAI) to support research projects.
  • Full coverage of travel and accommodation expenses for all in-person modules and workshops.
  • Opportunities to engage with policymakers, think tanks, and practitioners at events and workshops.
  • Potential publication of top research or policy projects as working papers or policy briefs by the Kiel Institute or CEPR.
  • A certificate of program participation upon successful completion.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Advanced PhD students or early career postdocs based in Europe who are actively specializing in geoeconomics or related quantitative fields.
  • Researchers seeking high-level mentorship, co-authorship opportunities, and direct access to senior academic experts and policymakers.
  • Scholars who need concrete research resources such as dedicated research assistants, data purchase grants, or AI tool subscriptions.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The program does not provide a salary, living stipend, or formal degree, requiring you to maintain your primary employment or PhD enrollment elsewhere.
  • On-site attendance for multi-day in-person modules across European locations is expected and requires balancing with your home institution commitments.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This program is ideal for early-career researchers aiming to bridge the gap between rigorous economic scholarship and actionable policy engagement in geoeconomics. Because it operates as an add-on fellowship without requiring you to leave your home institution, it serves as an exceptional accelerator for developing high-impact research papers, building a cross-border professional network, and gaining visibility among leading European institutions.

Our take

Advanced PhD students and early postdocs focusing on geoeconomics in Europe should strongly consider applying to secure elite mentorship and valuable research support. Those seeking a full degree program or a standalone salaried fellowship should note that this is an unpaid, part-time add-on commitment.
