About the opportunity

The World Health Organization (WHO) is recruiting a national consultant to support the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Sierra Leone in developing a Health National Adaptation Plan (H-NAP). The consultancy aims to help the health system better understand the impacts of climate change and identify strategies to maintain a resilient health system. The consultant will lead stakeholder consultations, conduct literature reviews, perform field visits to health facilities, and draft the H-NAP report using WHO quality criteria. The role involves a child-sensitive and gender-transformative assessment of health system vulnerabilities and the development of a costed action plan with monitoring and evaluation indicators. The assignment is for a duration of 3 months.

Salary and benefits

  • Remuneration at applicable fees as per the World Health Organization scale of Consultant at NOC level.
  • Professional experience in climate change and health policy development within a UN agency context.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • You possess a Master’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, or Climate Science.
  • You have at least 5 years of professional experience specifically within the climate change and health sector.
  • You have a proven track record of delivering at least one Vulnerability and Adaptation (V&A) or H-NAP report for the health sector.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The contract is short-term, lasting only 3 months, which may not suit those seeking long-term stability.
  • Travel costs are explicitly excluded from the remuneration, so you should verify if your local base allows for cost-effective in-country travel.
  • The role requires significant field visits and stakeholder engagement, necessitating a high level of on-site mobility within Sierra Leone.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This consultancy is an ideal fit if you are looking to build high-level policy experience within a UN agency context. It offers a focused opportunity to apply your technical expertise in climate resilience directly to a national health system, providing a tangible output for your portfolio. If you are aiming to transition into senior advisory roles or want to deepen your experience in gender-transformative health assessments, this project provides a clear, time-bound pathway to demonstrate your leadership in climate-sensitive health planning.

Our take

This role is best suited for experienced climate health professionals who can hit the ground running with minimal supervision. It is less suitable for those who require long-term employment or who are unable to manage the logistical demands of frequent local travel.
