About the opportunity

The Grief Reach grant program is a collaborative initiative created in 2011 by the National Alliance for Children’s Grief (NACG) and the New York Life Foundation to strengthen nonprofit infrastructure, enhance community access, and elevate the field of childhood bereavement across the United States. For Cycle 1 (2027), the program focuses specifically on School-Based Community Expansion through two tracks: Changemaker Supported Community Expansion and Community Expansion. Funding supports organizations with established bereavement services that are launching new school-based programming, scaling existing school partnerships, training educators, or delivering innovative grief support groups tailored to diverse student populations. Each organization may submit only one application per cycle.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Established U.S. nonprofit bereavement providers with active community programs ready to formalize or scale structured school partnerships
  • Organizations with at least three consecutive years of 501(c)(3) operation, professional paid staff, and up-to-date audited financial records
  • Teams proposing culturally responsive grief interventions that directly address underserved or diverse student populations in K-12 settings

What should you think carefully about?

  • Strict budget cap: grant requests cannot exceed 15% of the organization's most recent fiscal-year revenue, limiting the maximum request for smaller nonprofits
  • Two-stage submission: the mandatory eligibility pre-check closes ten days before the final application deadline, requiring early engagement
  • Strict character limits apply across application answers, and reviewers will disregard text exceeding those limits

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This grant cycle is well suited for youth bereavement organizations seeking to expand their physical footprint into educational settings without compromising core organizational finances. It provides catalytic funding to build institutional ties with local school districts, train educators on trauma-informed bereavement, and pilot or formalize in-school support groups.

Our take

Nonprofits with proven childhood bereavement programming and ready-to-launch school partnerships should prioritize this opportunity. Startups without three years of 501(c)(3) history, all-volunteer groups, and organizations seeking general operating funds without a school-based expansion project are not eligible.
