About the opportunity
London AI Safety Research (LASR) Labs is a technical AI safety research programme focused on reducing the risk of existential risk and loss of control from advanced AI. Participants work in small teams of three to four, supervised by experienced AI safety researchers, to take a research project from proposal to publication over a 13-week period. The programme is hosted at the London Initiative for Safe AI (LISA), allowing participants to work alongside other AI safety organisations and researchers.
Funding and benefits
- £15,000 stipend to cover living expenses in London.
- Provision of food.
- Provision of office space.
- Provision of travel.
Who can apply?
- Technical ability: Machine learning engineering experience and strong quantitative skills.
- Research ability: Willingness to experiment, iterate, and dive into execution under uncertainty, and an ability to develop a theory of change for a project focused on impact.
- Communication skills: Ability to clearly articulate the outcomes and implications of experiments, coupled with transparent reasoning.
- Expected to have built something substantial (e.g., a research result, a system or tool, an analysis, an experiment, or a proof) in any field, ML or not.
- Experience working with LLMs, whether in research, engineering, or serious self-directed projects.
- Evidence of taking real steps toward this kind of work on their own initiative (e.g., self-teaching ML, switching from another field, or starting a research project independently).

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Strong technical background in machine learning engineering and quantitative analysis.
- Demonstrated initiative in self-directed research or building substantial technical projects.
- Interest in AI safety and the ability to work collaboratively in small, high-intensity teams.
What should you think carefully about?
- The program is a 13-week, on-site commitment in London, requiring temporary relocation.
- The work is research-intensive and requires the ability to iterate and execute under uncertainty.
- You must be prepared to produce a technical paper within a short, fixed timeframe.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This cohort is perfect for researchers or engineers looking to pivot into or deepen their expertise in AI safety. It provides a structured environment to produce a high-quality publication, network with other safety-focused organizations, and gain hands-on experience under the guidance of established experts in the field.
Our take
An excellent choice for technical professionals looking to make a tangible contribution to AI safety research. It may be less suitable for those who prefer independent, long-term research cycles rather than the collaborative, fast-paced nature of this 13-week program.
