About the opportunity

The ICCROM Fellowship Programme is designed to bring fresh perspectives, facilitate the exchange of knowledge, and stimulate new research avenues in heritage conservation. Fellows engage with ICCROM staff and other professionals while conducting independent research. Proposals should align with ICCROM’s mission, with specific preference given to research on risk management, climate change, digital transition, and integrating heritage into broader policy agendas. Fellowships typically last between 3 and 6 months. While research is primarily conducted at ICCROM headquarters in Rome, partial online arrangements may be considered with justification. Fellows are expected to present their research findings at the end of their stay and provide feedback on the programme outcomes.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Senior heritage professionals with at least ten years of active field experience who hold a Master's degree or higher.
  • Researchers whose independent work directly aligns with ICCROM's focus on risk management, climate change, digital transition, or policy agendas.
  • Nationals or organizational representatives of ICCROM Member States with strong proficiency in English or French.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The fellowship is entirely self-funded, requiring candidates to cover all travel, accommodation, and personal insurance costs independently.
  • Applicants must secure compulsory global medical and accident insurance and provide an employer agreement if applicable.
  • While primarily based in Rome, partial online arrangements may be considered with sufficient justification.
  • Participants must conduct fully independent research without requesting direct supervision from ICCROM staff.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This fellowship is ideal for established heritage professionals aiming to dedicate a focused 3 to 6-month period to independent research while leveraging world-class conservation libraries and archives. It provides a strategic platform to advance conservation knowledge, engage with global peers, and present findings, making it a valuable addition to an academic or senior advisory career.

Our take

Senior heritage experts who can self-fund their stay and bring an aligned independent research proposal should strongly consider applying; however, those requiring financial support or institutional supervision will find this opportunity unsuitable.
