Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Early-stage doctoral candidates from eligible Global South countries with strong academic records seeking a joint European PhD degree
- Researchers who already have active research relationships or secured supervision at both Ghent University and a local home institution
- Applicants whose doctoral proposals address topics directly relevant to South-North partnerships, sustainable development, or global priorities
What should you think carefully about?
- Requires mandatory 24-month full-time co-funding (salary or scholarship) from the partner university in the Global South
- Enforces strict mobility windows between Belgium and the home institution unless a formal exception is pre-approved by mid-January 2027
- Selection is highly competitive with only 15 scholarships awarded globally across all academic disciplines
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This scholarship program is tailored for researchers in the Global South seeking high-quality international doctoral training while retaining strong institutional ties at home. It fits long-term career goals centered on academic mobility, joint degree attainment, and fostering sustainable research collaborations between European and Global South universities.
Our take
Candidates from the Global South who hold early-stage doctoral status and can guarantee full local co-funding alongside joint supervision should prioritize this opportunity. Those unable to secure 24 months of partner university funding or seeking full four-year living coverage in Belgium should explore alternate funding mechanisms.
